As of FY19, India was the second-largest producer and consumer of cement in the world after China with an installed capacity of around 480 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA). The industry accounted for more than 8% of the global installed capacity of cement production. But, per capita consumption of cement was only around 210 kilograms (kg), the lowest among developing countries. In contrast, China’s per capita consumption of cement was 1,780 kg and the world average was around 580 kg. The industry contributed about Rs. 500 billion per year to the Government of India (GoI) in the form of taxes and levies.
